Numerous studies have been carried out to investigate the mechanism of the spatter production and waveform parameters affecting the spatter production, because more operations are needed to remove spatter. They explain the mechanism qualitatively but do not clarify it quantitatively. Also, they do not illustrate how the waveform parameters influence the spatter production.
In this study, integral of specific current action is introduced to explain the mechanism of spatter production quantitatively. Based on the previous studies, this study proposes a model suggesting that there is a constant value of integral of specific current action to determine the moment of the spatter production. Parameters influencing spatter generation are derived and the methods of spatter calculation are proposed. By comparing the spatter calculations with the welding experiments, the model is validated. Simulations are carried out to investigate the influence of the waveform parameters on the spatter production. This explains the role of the waveform parameters such as the peak current and the arc time in the spatter production quantitatively. The influence of surface tension coefficient, current at short circuit start and increase rate of short circuit current on spatter generation are investigated through simulations.
A short circuit model is proposed to predict the variation of short circuit parameters considering the effect of wire feed rate on the arc length. The previous short circuit model is tested and new arc coefficient is proposed. By using the coefficient, short circuit parameters such as peak current, mean current and arc voltage are calculated and compared with welding experiments.
