Two-dimensional vortex-airfoil interaction at low speed is studied experimentally by immersing an instrumented NACA 0012 airfoil in an Anechoic Wind Tunnel at KAIST. Vortices are generated by pitching an airfoil impulsively controlled by a servo motor. The vortex generator creates periodic vortices or a single vortex. When the generated vortex interacts with the instrumented airfoil located downstream of the generator, it creates rather sharp and local variations of surface pressure in the vicinity of the leading edge of the target airfoil. The unsteady surface pressure are measured by Scanivalve system. The target airfoil was installed with a moveable trailing edge flap controlled by the other smaller servo motor. The flap control system is fitted for reducing the unsteady load on the airfoil during the parallel vortex interaction by the motor driven flap in the correct angular displacement rate and phase. The self noise from the generator are studied for reduced using tripped airfoil. The sensors on the airfoil are design selected to capture the major pressure fluctuation. The motor system are installed to generate the vortex and active the flap efficiently. Effects of initial angle of attack of vortex generator airfoil and effects of rotational direction of generated vortex are also studied.
