The issue of brand equity has emerged as one of the most important areas for marketing management in 1990s. Yet, there is little empirical study about the antecedents and consequences of brand equity. Also, while the brand equity associated with tangible goods has received a great deal of attention in the literature, a basic understanding of the nature of brand equity for services has yet to emerge.
Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore relationships between the antecedents and consequences of brand equity for services by empirical tests using a structural equation model.
The results of this empirical study, using data collected from 76 brands for service, indicate that there are positive relationships between some of antecedents and consequences of brand equity for service. The brands with longer age, higher distribution intensity and higher advertising spending compared to competitors yield higher levels of brand equity. In turn, the brands with higher brand equity generated greater market share and profit.
