In this paper, mechanical design of the upper body of a humanoid robot and motion control algorithms are presented. The upper body consists of two parts, arm and hand. The robot arm is designed based on the idea of simple structure and multi-usage. It consists of 6 DC motors and harmonic drives. The robot hand with 8 DC motors is designed with an efficient mechanical structure which is small in size and can provide sufficient power.
An hybrid architecture is proposed to control the arm and hand for object grasping task. It consists of a reactive layer and a deliberative layer. In the reactive layer, a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and a Force Sensing Registers (FSR) are employed to grasp objects. The FLC controls the motors for stable grasping motion using force information from FSR attached to the tip of each finger. The deliberative layer includes high level architectures, such as object recognition, path planning and grasp strategy.
The hybrid architecture was tested with the designed upper body. Experimental results showed that the proposed architecture worked well in grasping two kinds of objects.
