Usability is becoming an increasingly critical issue for commercial websites, Even big brand names are losing substantial because their sites are too complicated for customers. However, even today many organizations are forging ahead with plans for new sites or site changes with ill-defined goals and very little consideration of the ROI.
This study aims to develop the model for measuring ROI(Return on Investment) of usability testing in user-interface design projects. To develop the model, this study has undergone the following stages: Firstly, the model for measuring ROI of usability testing is defined and the needs for ROI measurement method are discussed. Secondly, the current ROI measurement method is analyzed thoroughly and the ROI measurement methods in other field are selected for solving condensed limitations. And finally, based on the needs from literature studies, the novel model is developed and applied to user-interface design projects. The case study is carried out to verify the effectiveness of the model and to demonstrate the usage of the model.
By this process, this model is developed, and it is possible to estimate ROI of usability testing, make an estimate reasonably, measure advantage of usability testing effectively, and improve usability testing process.
본 연구는 사용자 인터페이스 디자인 프로젝트에서 사용성 평가의 비용대비 효과를 측정하기 위해 ROI 기법을 활용한 측정 모델을 개발하기 위함이다. 연구방법은 먼저, 측정모델 개발 이전에 사용성 평가의 ROI 측정에 대한 정의와 ROI 측정의 필요성에 대하여 알아보았다. 다음으로, 기존 ROI 측정 방법의 고찰과 함께 한계점을 파악하였고, 이를 해결하기 위해 적용 가능한 타분야 성과측정 방법을 선정하여 이에 대하여 알아보았다. 마지막으로, 기존 측정 모델의 한계점을 해결한 사용성 평가 ROI 측정 모델을 제안하고, 이의 활용가능성을 검증하기 위해 사례연구를 진행하였다.
ROI 측정 모델은 사용성 평가를 통해 발생 가능한 성과를 예측하거나 검증하기 위해 사전분석과 사후분석 단계 모두 고려하였다. 사전분석은 사용성 평가 투자에 대한 의사결정을 지원하기 위한 도구 역할을 하며, 사후분석을 통해 프로젝트 완료 이후 미리 예상했던 목표를 달성했는지 모니터링하고, 그 결과에 대한 원인을 분석하였다. 이렇게 제안한 측정 모델은 사례연구를 통해 다음과 같은 활용가능성을 검증하였다. 첫째, ROI 기법을 활용해서 성과의 객관적 수치화를 가능하게 했고, 둘째, 사전분석을 통해 ROI를 예측하고 합리적으로 예산을 책정할 수 있도록 하였다. 셋째, 사후분석을 통해 효과적인 성과의 측정이 가능하였고, 넷째, 사용성 평가 방법론을 합리적으로 선택할 수 있었다.
