Batch cultures of Aspergillus terreusr were carried out at 28℃ with no pH control and at three different pH's of 6.0, 6.5, 7.0. The initial glucose concentration was 80g/L. When the pH was not controlled, the highest MA concentration of 1,220 mg/L was obtained in 6 days. The total amount of MA was 3,660 mg. In the batch cultures, MA production stopped when glucose was depleted. Therefore fed-batch cultures were carried out to extend the period of MA production. When the culture was started with an initial glucose concentration of 80 g/L and a concentrated medium containing 300 g/L glucose was intermittently fed by a pH-stat method, only 1,280 mg/L (4,110 mg) of MA was produced in 6 days. When a concentrated medium with glucose and other nutrients was fed, 1,600mg/L (6,080 mg) of MA was produced in 6 days. To study the effects of the initial glucose concentration, batch cultures with two different initial glucose concentrations of 120 and 160 g/L were also carried out with no pH control. With 120 g/L of the initial glucose concentration, 3,030 mg/L (9,090 mg) of MA was produced in 8 days.
