An in situ three-configurational surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE) system has been developed to study ultrathin film magnetism under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) condition. Main feature of this system is the simultaneous measurements of Kerr rotations and Kerr ellipticities in the `polar', longitudinal', and `transverse' geometries at the position where deposition is carried out in a UHV growth chamber. It enables in situ three-dimensional (3D) vectorial studies of ultrathin film magnetism with a submonolayer sensitivity. We have also developed a novel method to determine all the components of magnetization vector in ultrathin ferromagnetic films using magneto-optical Kerr effects of either both p- and s-polarization waves or each polarization wave. This technique has been applied to in situ study of magnetization reversal and spin-reorientation transition (SRT) in ultrathin Co films grown on Pt(111) and Pd(111) single-crystal substrates. We observed contrasting vectorial magnetization reversal behavior dependent on the direction of magnetic easy axis. In particular, for 5.25 ML of Co, a slightly canted magnetization vector from the film normal rotates via a spiral motion in the film plane under an applied magnetic field normal to the film plane, which could be explained by an existence of in-plane anisotropy and a small tilt of an applied field.
A relation between growth structures or morphology and magnetic properties of Co ultrathin films on Pd(111) surface are studied with a UHV scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and SMOKE measurement as a function of Co thickness. At the beginning of growth, the STM image of I ML Co shows almost complete monolayer coverage instead of disconnected islands. STM images of Co-covered surface reveal that the growth proceeds as a good layer-by-layer epitaxy up to a thickness of 2 ML. At higher coverages, the surface of the film shows uniformly distributed 3D clusters of ' 5 nm size manifesting 3D-like growth mode, which could be understood in connection with strain relaxation. There is a drastically different behavior in SRT of ultrathin Co films grown on smooth vs rough Pd(111) surfaces. On an atomically flat surface, a slow transition from perpendicular to in-plane magnetization occurs in the thickness range of over 1.5 ML, beginning at ti 4.5 ML. In contrast, rough surface causes the transition to begin quite earlier at < 3 ML and complete abruptly in less than 1 ML range. Morphology effects on the magnetic properties of Co films obtained with STM images suggest that non-uniform coverage of Co on rough surface leads to locally thicker regions triggering earlier SRT. Interestingly, in this transition region of Co films, a little Pd overlayer is found to drastically change the orientation of the magnetic easy axis. Moreover, in the Co/Pd multilayer films the orientation of magnetic easy axis changes from perpendicular to canted direction and vice versa depending on the topmost overlayer, which shows a reversible behavior caused possibly by strain evolution of buried magnetic layers.
The interface structures of ultrathin Co films on Pt(111) substrate have been investigated with medium energy ion scattering spectroscopy (MEIS) and SMOKE measurements. For a 7 ML Co, interdiffusion begins at 673 K to form a heavily distorted Co-Pt surface alloy layer with little change in SMOKE intensity. However, annealing at 773 K forms a 30 atomic-layers thick Co-Pt substitutional alloy with tensile strain, which is responsible for the substantial enhancement of the Kerr intensity more than 200 %.
Contrasting SRT behaviors in Co films grown on between Pt(111) and Pd(111) substrates are investigated with in situ magneto-optical Kerr vector magnetometry. At the region of SRT from the perpendicular to in-plane magnetization with increasing Co thickness, canted out-of-plane orientations are observed, from which we can determine not only the effective second-(K2) but also fourth- (K4) order anisotropy constants. Both the constants, which can be separated into bulk, K2b(4b), and interface anisotropy terms, K2s(45), are essential to understand the stable canted out-of-plane magnetization. We found that the value of K25 for Co/Pt(111) is larger than that for Co/Pd (111), which results in the later onset thickness and wider range of the observed SRT: On the other hand, the negative small values of Kos in the both systems yield the stable canted phases. In addition, we observed different polarization effects of Pd and Pt near the interfaces which might also contribute the contrasting SRT behaviors.
