VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol) based on broad internet users can transport voice with about 20 % bandwidth resources of the existing PSTN' s and has reached QoS level of wireless telephony. Now VoIP service is noticed as the killer application, which makes it possible to integrate the circuit network and the packet network.
The existing telcos with PSTN are in a difficult situation since they have focused on telephone service by this time. So, they may provide VoIP service themselves in order to reform their own profit structure, which can bring about the cannibalism. Therefore they will have to cope carefully with the change of the market environment.
The thesis analyzed the market trends related with VoIP, and then inferred the inevitability that a common carrier cannot but drive forward VoIP business. And it suggested how common carriers in Korea should confront with the VoIP service market change. Also, it inferred target customers in VoIP business through the analysis of the customer' s needs of VoIP service. And then it analyzed the profitability of VoIP business in order to prove the validity of the business entrance when Korea Telecom drives forward VoIP business as the common carrier based on the inevitability.
This thesis employed the scenario scheme to analyze the profitability of VoIP business. First, the strategic alternatives of VoIP business were contemplated. Second, the scenarios of the market change were inferred from the uncertainty and the alternatives were matched on each scenario. Third, after the analysis of the profitability by the alternative, the effect on the existing PSTN revenue was analyzed.
According to the result of this study, several suggestions are made to the common carriers such as Korea Telecom, To drive forward the VoIP business, they will have to concentrate on the high-speed internet access users. Besides, they need to make every effort to provide the value-added VoIP services to improve the profitability of the business. And they need to intensely deploy the marketing strategy to prevent the existing customers from leaving PSTN service for defeating the loss of PSTN revenue. Also, they have to connect the other VoIP networks to maximize the network externality and improve the profitability of the interconnection charge.
