This study deals with the introduction of decision support system (DSS) into waste material exchange program in Korea. Waste material exchange is widely adopted as one of the most desirable ways to treat wastes and there are several such exchange programs in many countries.
With the rapid development of information technology, electronic databases and internet are widely used in waste material exchange. Decision support system, which has been recently introduced the applications in environment-related field, can be employed in waste material exchange to achieve more effective transactions and to maximize the benefit from the exchange.
Reviewing several countries’ waste material exchange programs and the cases of DSS in waste treatment fields, we identified the required functions of DSS for Korean waste material exchange programs. Based upon the findings, we designed a model and dialog system for the DSS supporting the waste exchange process. A linear programming method was used for the model. With the introduction of DSS, we provide additional suggestions on how to improve Korean waste material exchange programs.
