Access network is defined as the transmission path between the customer and the local exchange, and is comprised of customer premise equipment, the local exchange and lines between them. Until recently this network has been changed little from the days of the invention of the telephone. With the explosively increasing demand for data transmission capacity caused by the spectacular growth in the multimedia service as well as the Internet traffic, it is inevitable for network operators to upgrade their access networks.
A number of solutions for broadband network access via various physical media, however, are currently being available. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL or xDSL) and Hybrid Fiber/ Coax (HFC) technologies, which use the existing twisted copper pairs for telephone service and the coaxial cable for the traditional CATV service, respectively, are very attractive because of their maximum use of the existing media. But only limited services are possible since they could not break off with the old age. Other technologies using wireless or satellite-based technologies are being developed for the places where mobility may be needed, but the generic weaknesses of the wireless technologies such as bandwidth limitation, poor quality of services have to be overcome. With the help of the advancement of technology and the mass production, what it was regarded impossible is becoming to realize. Now nobody raises an objection to the opinion that the optical fiber technology is one of the ultimate alternatives for the broadband access network because of its almost unlimited capacity of bandwidth and other advantages. The solutions using fiber in the loop form a family loosely called Fiber To The x-place(FTTx) solutions, where the x stands for one of several letters of the alphabet. Those technologies are usually categorized by distance of ONU from customers' premises: FTTH(fiber th the home), FTTB(fiber to the building), FTTO(fiber to the office), FTTC(fiber to the curb), and so on.
No matter what technologies used in building the broadband access network, we still have many problems to solve. The special attention has to be called for making an investment in the access networks since these networks account for over 50% of the total investment in communication facilities. One of the major reasons for the heavy investment is that the customers are widely dispersed and each of them has to be connected to CO. What makes more difficult in making investment decision is the variety of the technological alternatives that are still being developed and appear day after day. And the access network investment decision is regarded as a matter of life or death of the company.
This thesis considers the problems encountered in the planning and design of the fiber-based broadband access network. There are a number of studies on the access network design and the fiber-based backbone network design but the results of them cannot be directly applied to the fiver-based access network design because of little consideration for the unique characteristics of it. Dispersed nature of customers makes the demand forecasting more difficult and the network service providers hesitate about making an investment. The relatively shorter length of link forces network planners to consider the other network topologies rather than those used in building the backbone network. The fiber-based access network planning, though similar to copper-based one, requires additional considerations such as ONU location and the network survivability.
Chapter 2 considers the problem determining the ONU location and capacity under uncertain demand, which is important in FTTx planning and design. The earlier studies on the access network expansion ignored the demand uncertainty, one of the key complicating factors that a network planner has to overcome. The traditional practice of the sequential and divide-and-conquer approach has some drawbacks, i.e., it is probable that the last solution is just local optimal and the wrong decisions made in the previous subproblems affect the rest of the subproblems. We take two problems, the ONU location problem and the economic order quantity problem, and formulate them as one problem and solve it in a streamlined fashion. The objective of this problem is to minimize not only the costs locating ONU but also the expected shortage costs. Reformulating the problem in column generation approach, we focus on solving the subproblem while utilizing the integrality property of the main problem. Exploiting the special structure of the expected shortage cost function, we reduce the computational efforts by removing the unnecessary searching in advance similar to the branch and bound approach. The simulation results show that our approach outperformed the multi-phased approach by 20%.
The objective of Chapter 3 is to study the problems encountered in planning the copper-based network and utilize the underlying ideas in building the fiber-based network. There are two wiring methods in traditional technology, direct wiring using PCP. Though the direct wiring method provide the better quality of service since the noise level is kept lower form the direct connection, this method requires more cable supply for the unknown future demand than the indirect wiring method, in which the utilization of cable is high since a PCP plays a buffer-like role. By analyzing the shortage costs of both methods, we evaluate the value of PCP introduction in the access network. This chapter also deals with the problem of how to allocate the given circuit supply to each small area to minimize the expected shortage cost. We prove that equalizing the shortage probability of each area minimizes the total expected shortage cost. We present an efficient algorithm for the optimal allocation by utilizing this property. The problems presented in this chapter may not be directly related to the fiber-based network design but we can see the role of the loop in the fiber-based network has a connection with the PCP and capacity allocation of ONU to customers is very closely connected with the circuit allocation.
Chapter 4 considers the design of overall access network. The ring-star structure is economically and technically proven in the backbone network but it is questionable that this structure is still excellent in the access network, where the links are relatively short. The loop-star structure is a good alternative to introduce the optical fiber cable in the access network in the sense that it provides the reasonable level of survivability of network, which is one of the most critical weaknesses of the fiber-based network, and the flexibility coping with the unknown future demand. The trade-off between the installation cost and the possible link cost is formulated in the model. We present a network flows theories based heuristic algorithm for this model. The purpose of this study is to provide the network planner with a set of good solutions rather than to solve the problem optimally, and thus leading the network plan to be effective and efficient one. We tested our algorithm with the real problem with more than 500 ONUs in the network and got various access network design solutions by varying the parameters of the model.
Though the models studied in this thesis are simplified and does not explain the whole phenomena of the real world network, they would be helpful in understanding the effects of the important economical factors in designing the access network. Grasping good details of access network planning, we suggested integrated models considering the various cost factors and the characteristics of fiber-based access network especially the demand uncertainty and the survivability. It is expected that the approaches and the detailed solution methods will be useful tools to solve the problems encountering in the access network planning. We hope these results to be helpful in economic broadband access network planning and design and thus contributing to the competitiveness of network service providers for the high quality and low price services.
광대역 가입자망을 구축하는 기술들에는 ADSL(asymmetric digital subscriber line)으로 대표되는 xDSL 기술들과 HFC(hybrid fiber-coax)는 기존에 이미 다른 용도로 사용하고 있는 가입자망을 고도화하는 대표적인 기술들이다. FTTH(fiber to the home), FTTO(fiber to the office), FTTB(fiber to the building), FTTC(fiber to the curb) 등으로 부른다.
