In this thesis, we investigate several problems concerned with the $H^2/H^\infty$ control, estimation and model reduction under various concepts such as stability, robust and optimality. We note that $H^\infty$ approach gives a robust algorithm for a system existing a bound model uncertainty. We apply $H^\infty$ scheme to the channel equalizer problem. An $H^\infty$ optimized equalizer is presented to realize an optimal causal and stable equalizer of the single-channel equalization problem. The proposed algorithm achieves intersymbol interference cancellation and noise attenuation in the view point of $H^\infty$ optimization. The communication system usually suffers some uncertainties of the channel parameter and the statistics of noise. Our algorithm is robust while the channel characteristics and the statistics of inputs and external noise have uncertainty within a bound. Moreover, while the conventional $H^\infty$ approach is to minimize a peak error gain over the entire frequency range, we propose a modified $H^\infty$ equalizer to emphasize the used limited frequency region by using a weight function.
The above mentioned $H^\infty$ problems an usually be solved via a generalized spectral factorization problem (Spectral factorization, J-spectral factorization, and non-canonical Wiener-Hopf factorization) in the frquency domain. We note that both continuous and discrete-time algebraic Riccati equations (ARE's) under fairly general conditions are closely related to the generalized spectral factorization problems. There are a great amount of previous studies to solving Riccati equations under various conditions. The one is invariant subspace methods such as the Extended Hamiltonian Pencil method, and The other is the iterative method such as the Schur recursion. We shall discuss two algorithms for generalized spectral factorization.
In the first part of thesis, we present a "Krein-space version" of the Schur recursion for the J-spectral factorization which arises in $H^\infty$-related problems. The most notable difference of the proposed Schur recursion from the ordinary one is that the proposed recursion can handle temporary changes of the inertia during the process. We show that the Schur recursion in the Krein space converges to a J-spectral for factor exponentially under a suitable condition.
Second, we propose an explicit algorithm for s non-canonical symmetric. Wiener-Hopf factorization of a selfadjoint rational matrix function, based on the extended Hamiltonian pencil (EHP), which does not admit the conventional Wiener-Hopf factorization. The factorization may be applied to parameterizing the optimal or suboptimal solutions of the Nehari problem and the $H^\infty$ problem. We also show the properties of the factors derived from the proposed algorithm.
Finally, we propose a new algorithm for factorization of the displacement structured matrices. Specifically, we present a partial pivoting Schur-type algorithm for the factorization of matrices with the Jordan displacement structure. It is shown that a matrix with Jordan displacement structure is transformed into a Cauchy-like matrix via a matrix with circulant displacement structure. Using the property that a Cauchy-like matrix retains its displacement structure even though it is pivoted, we present a partial pivoting Schur-like algorithm which is fast and stable for a degenerate or irregular case.
