This thesis considers multi-item spares inventory models with joint demand and repair allowed where each joint demand represents the situation of simultaneously requiring multi-items for any repairing activity (job) for an equipment.
In the thesis, a multi-part single echelon spares inventory model is considered first for a maintenance system composed of a spares-stocking center and a repair center. In the maintenance system, multi-part spares are jointly needed to repair any faulty end items determined by ambiguous fault isolation done by a built-in-test-equipment (BITE). For example, if any operating end item breaks down, then all associated parts should be replaced either iteratively (one at a time) or altogether. In the case of iterative replacement, all the failed parts are to be detected later at the field after fixing the broken end item. However, in the case of group (altogether) replacement, all the associated parts are removed and sent to the repair center where the failed part is detected and fixed. The repaired and non-failed parts are then restocked at the spares-stocking center. For the maintenance system, the exact expressions for the distribution function and expected numbers of the backlogged end items under the cannibalization policy are analyzed. These expressions are then used for the optimization of the associated spares’ inventory level. Illustrative numerical examples are also presented.
The above single echelon inventory model is then extended to a multi-echelon inventory model. In the model, the inventory system is composed of a set of bases(lower echelon). serving for end items equipped with BITE’s and a central depot(upper echelon). If an end item at a base breaks down due to its failed part, then any ambiguous fault isolation of the BITE will cause multi-parts to be removed and replaced jointly with spares at the field. In fixing the end item, if there is not enough spares on hand at the base to replace any of the removed parts, then the whole end item will remain backlogged. All the associated removed parts are inspected at the base by using appropriate diagnostic equipments, every failed part is screened out and directly sent to the depot where those failed parts are repaired while unfailed (good) parts are restocked at the base. At the depot, repaired parts are restocked at inventory facility where spare parts will be used for filling requirements from any base. If any part is found not economical to repair, then it will be condemned. And all the replenishment at the depot can be made from external suppliers. For the system, the exact expressions for the expected numbers of backlogged end items are derived for each of the bases. These expressions are then used for the optimization of the associated spares’ inventory levels for both depot and bases.
Finally, a comparative performance evaluation among some spares-releasing policies is made for general multi-item inventory systems with joint demand allowed. In such a situation allowing joint demand of multi-items in any inventory system, one or more different items are simultaneously needed for at each demand so that the expected number of backlogged jobs is dependent on the policies of releasing (using) available stocked items (spares), while the expected number of backlogged items is not. Five different types of such releasing policies are proposed, and their performances are evaluated under the measure of backlog.
