The main purpose of R&D in engineering company is to be a leading developer and licensor of process technologies. To achieve this goal, many engineering companies in the world try to capture leadership in engineering through new technology. While on the other, Korean engineering companies are weak in competition power and R&D strategy. This thesis therefore aims to show the effective technology development strategy and research management.
This study is composed of two parts: first, based on the review of literature, the methodology of performing the key tasks in R&D process is identified. To be concrete, main contents are the strategic management of technological R&D, environmental analysis method, strategic evaluation and selection of R&D projects and critical success factor in technology development. And also this thesis describe how technology strategy relates technical capabilities to competitive advantage. The second part involve the analysis of technology development strategy of exiting Korean engineering company and suggest the improved competitive strategy stance, value chain stance, resource stance and management stance. To increase the competition power of technology development of sample company, these four substance should be addressed in technology strategy, as it is enacted through the various tasks of acquisition, development and application.
The analysis result show the importance of technology development strategy based on corporate strategy, matrix R&D organization including project discipline and technology acquisition method. In order to achieve and execute these results, and also in the cause of increasing of core competence, Korean engineering companies should increase the basic design capability and build effective technology development strategy based on accurate environmental analysis and technology forecasting.
