Investigation of ignition and flame propagation of pyrolyzing fuel in a cylindrical enclosure is accomplished. The pyrolyzing fuel of cylindrical shape is located in an outer cylinder sustained at high-temperature. Due to gravity, the buoyancy motion is inevitably incurred in the enclosure and this may affect the flame initiation and propagation behavior. The radiative heat transfer due to gas may play an important role so that it is included in the analysis since a high temperature difference is involved in the problem.
As a preliminary study, a numerical investigation has been performed to study the radiation-affected steady-laminar natural convection induced by a hot inner cylinder under a large temperature difference in the cylindrical annuli filled with a gray gas. To examine the effects of thermal radiation on thermo-fluid dynamics behavior in the eccentric geometry, the generalized body-fitted coordinate system is introduced while the finite volume method (FVM) is used for solving the radiative transport equation. After validating numerical results for the case without radiation, the detailed radiation effect has been discussed. Based on the final results of this study, when there exists a large temperature difference between two cylinders, the existence of a radiatively participating medium is found to incur a distinctive behavior in fluid dynamics as well as thermal behavior.
Using the radiation and flow solver developed above, a two-dimensional and unsteady numerical model is adopted to analyze the ignition and flame propagation of pyrolyzing fuel. The theoretical model includes the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes momentum, energy and species equations with a single step overall chemical reaction and second-order, finite rate Arrhenius kinetics. Equations and initial and boundary conditions are properly non-dimensionalized by introducing appropriate non-dimensional numbers. Numerical studies are performed over various governing parameters, such as Grashof number, gas absorption, overheat ratio, vertical fuel eccentricity and diameter ratio. Depending on the Grashof number, the flame behavior is found to be totally different. For the case of relatively small overheat ratio, the gas absorption reduces the flow intensity and a visible flame does not evolve. For a high overheat ratio, the surface radiation makes the visible flame more obvious. The location of flame onset is also affected by the vertical eccentricity of inner pyrolyzing fuel and thermal conditions applied. The diameter ratio does not show a distinct effect on the flame behavior.
