A micro internal combustion engine has been proposed and fabricated using surface micromachining technique with thick photoresist mold and nickel electroplating. Its chamber size is 0.2㎣ includes mechanical spring, spark plug, piston, inlet port, and outlet port. Separation between electrodes in the two spark plug is 20 ㎛ and its breakdown voltage has been measured 350 V. It has been observed that butane gas can be ignited in the micro chamber when 50 mJ is applied to the spark plug of the engine. Burning velocity has been measured as 1.33 cm/sec and cellular flame has been observed with its grain size about 100㎛ This flame made from the fabricated micro engine is the world smallest as reported to date. This experiment demonstrates that building of micro engine is feasible below sub-cubic millimeter in volume.
