Rapid Prototyping is a technology generating physical objects rapidly from the graphical computer data. The recent development of RP can be regarded as an useful tool for designers by supplying prototypes effectively and efficiently. The RP models can be used not only in the design development, but also in the design evaluation and usability test. Therefore, there is a need for developing a systematic study on the application of RP technology into the design process.
The goal of this study is to investigate the characteristics of RP and develop a methodology for applying RP into the design process. The characteristics of RP can be categorized into flexibility, accuracy, rapidity and varieties of materials used. On the basis of literature review, a design process model is suggested to use QFD for analyzing form attribute to meet user's requirements, and Multi-dimensional Scale for drawing out form elements by statistical analysis.
With this model, virtual prototype is developed for the purpose of making various forms and visual test. Physical prototype is developed for usability test. This study proceeded with a case study of Hair-Dryer. Virtual prototype can be developed using morphing system, and physical prototype can be established with data from it.
For the design form development with these prototypes, virtual prototype is used for user-participationary design and physical prototype for usability test about user's sensitivity on form. The design form can be synthesized from results of these.
