Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is now extensively used as an indispensable means of research in material science, especially as a non-invasive means of studying properties of biological tissues in vivo. Information available from NMR is based on the analysis of the NMR signal coming from an object of interest after a proper pulse sequence operation. The general response of a nuclear spin-1/2 system to arbitrary RF pulses is described with a new method, the magnetization pathway vector formalism. The general response derived by this formalism includes the NMR spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$, spin-spin relaxation time $T_2$ and self-diffusion coefficient D.
Construction of the formalism, new method to measure $T_1$ by using the formalism, and structure and operation characteristics of a homemade NMR spectrometer are described in this thesis. And a correlation between the germination of excised embryos from soybean seeds and the corresponding NMR relaxation times that are obtained by the homemade NMR system and the new method is also described. Through several examples, validity of this formalism is verified and some correlation between the germination of the embryo and the NMR spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$ is reported.
