Cathode Ray Tube(CRT) industry is in mature stage of product life cycle, and it has been threatened by Flat Panel Display(FPD). Existing technologies of CRT are different from the technologies of FPD including Liquid Crystal Display(LCD), Plasma Display Panel(PDP) etc. Radical innovation under new technological paradigm can destruct existing core competencies. How can we respond to these discontinuous technological changes that may make existing core competencies useless?
This study focuses on the R&D strategies in response to the discontinuous technological changes in a business level. For this purpose, the research questions are:
1) What forces affect competitive environment of CRT industry?
2) Where is the current position of CRT industry?
3) What are the R&D strategies in response to discontinuous technological changes from CRT to FPD under the environment?
The major contributions of this study are as follows: First, based on the review of related literature, the forces which affect CRT industry under competitive environment and current position of CRT industry are identified. Second, the R&D strategies in response to discontinuous technological changes from CRT to FPD are suggested in a business level.
