Knowledge management has been a hot issue these days not alse in Korea, but in foreign countries. We have had a lot of difficulties in the past one year under the IMF bailout. At the beginning of this year, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, one of the largest consulting company in the world, reported a paper that pointed out the reason of Korean crises and gave us some advises. They said that in order to overcome this situation, the first thing we have to do is recognizing the knowledge gap between Korea and developed countries and decreasing it.
There are a lot of research areas about Knowledge Management(KM), but this research deals with the implementing strategy of firms' Knowledge Management System successfully. Among the factors that affect implementation, This study chooses 3 different main factors - Industrial, Cultural and Information Technological characteristics. In order to analyze the relationship between the three main factors and successful KM implementation, this study shows 22 firms' cases including 10 Korean company' cases and 12 developed country's cases. This research tried to find out 4 solutions as following. First, a company has to select right methods according to the firm's industrial characteristic, whether knowledge intensity focuses on process or product/service. Second, firms' competitive superiority of cultural and IT characteristics affects the implementation of KM projects. Third, what are the successful factors of KM projects for Korean firms. Finally, this study suggests KMS implementation strategy for Korean firms after analyzing the 22 firms' cases.
Implementing Knowledge Management project in n company, firms' strengths and weaknesses from the 3 main factors point of view should be considered.
