In this thesis, we investigate the performance of asynchronous multiple-chip-rate (MCR)-DS/CDMA systems where signals are transmitted at different chip rates, carrier frequencies, processing gains, and transmitted power according to their own bit rates and BERs. The BERs are evaluated by means of a simplified expression for the improved Gaussian approximation (SEIGA), which is known for as a very accurate and simple tool for the performance evaluation. However, due to the coexistence of signals of different bit rates and chip rates with different carrier frequencies in the same radio frequency bandwidth, the analysis of MCR-DS/CDMA systems is much more complicated than that of conventional DS/CDMA systems. Hence, in the derivation of the BERs performance of the MCR-DS/CDMA systems, we make use of correlations of chip waveforms and integrations instead of using correlations of chip sequences in conventional method. Some quantitative results on the effects of chip rates, processing gain, and different carrier frequencies for MCR-DS/CDMA systems with random codes are obtained. Since a statistically good and very long PN sequence (such as maximal-length, Gold, and Kasami sequence) behaves like a pure random sequence, this results can be applied for the systems with long codes.
The analysis results obtained in this thesis will help us select the appropriate system parameters (such as processing gain, chip rates, carrier frequency, and transmitted power) for multi-rate DS/CDMA systems.
