The purpose of this study is to develop a framework for implementing of manufacturing technology innovation strategy. The study of Advanced Manufacturing Technology(AMT) has been concerned about financial aspects and manufacturing strategy aspects. This study however deals with manufacturing strategy aspects, technology strategy aspects and financial aspects simultaneously.
A sequential framework for implementing manufacturing technology innovation strategy was suggested and it was validated by a case study of Braun tube manufacturer. First step of the framework is to develop strategic manufacturing technology initiatives(SMTI) through evaluation of manufacturing strategic dimensions. Next step is to evaluate SMTI by technology strategy variables and to determine the source of technology acquisition. Finally, alternatives of SMTI are evaluated by financial criteria. Eight innovation projects were analyzed with this suggested framework.
The result of the case study shows that the suggested framework is well fit in the cases of new technology investment. It is quite natural that all the activities of manufacturing technology strategy should consider manufacturing strategy aspect. Through the analysis of cases we found that if the purpose of investment is short-term, the evaluation of technology strategy aspect would be of no use, and we can divide evaluation factors by the characteristics of investment. We conclude the thesis by proposing a revised framework based on the case study findings.
