The complexity of OSI network management lies in the managed system as opposed to the managing system. Manager processes within the managing system invoke CMIS operations to monitor and control network resources. These operations are performed on managed objects in the managed system. It takes long time to be completed if operations are sequentially performed on each managed object.
In this thesis, we design a new process structure for the managed system which performs CMIS operations concurrently on the managed objects. When the managed system receives a CMIS operation request, threads for each managed object are created and concurrently executed. But, such multiple threads could result in mutual exclusion problem. We implemented our managed system with OSIMIS-4.0 TMN platform, and used pthread library to add multi-thread capability and to resolve mutual exclusion problem.
To evaluate the performance of our system, we constructed a network management system which monitors UNIX hosts within a network. We measured response time to each CMIS operation request on the proposed and other systems. Experimental results show that our system significantly outperforms others in the response time.
