According to the previous researches, mentorship is one way to promote mutually benificial relationship between the individual and the organization. A mentor is a trusted and experienced person who advises, helps the younger employees in the organization. A mentor can play an important role in the development of an individual's career and his integration to the organization.
This Study examines the factors influencing mentoring and uncovers the relationship among mentoring, newcomers' socialization and their performance.
Survey data were collected from 310 respondents employed in Korean companies with a formal mentoring program.
This empirical study shows that (1)male proteges receive more mentoring and male mentors give more mentoring, (2)four personalities(extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness) are positively related to mentoring and neuroticism is negatively related to mentoring, (3)there are differences in mentoring function among researchers, managerials, salesforces, (4)career-oriented mentoring is most active when the position of mentor is manager than when assistant manager, (5)mentoring is positively related to newcomer's socialization and their performance, (6)there were not differences in the quality of mentoring among the degrees of formalization in mentoring program.
