There would be high risk in developing new technology because of uncertainty and /or severe technological competition in these days. Developing by themselves all the required technology for their companies would result low efficiency and big burden of companies. To overcome these obstacles, we need to adopt strategic technology outsourcing. For technology outsourcing, licensing, alliance and R&D contracts are widely used between companies. It is required for acquiring emerging new technology which would be successful in the near future. but it is very hard to know the right technology. Companies are trying to get technology from various outsources, for example, operating overseas laboratories, having some contracts with universities, but these would be very cost.
On this study, I propose a model which patent system, lead user concept and technology outsourcing method are used integrately to acquire new technology with fast and efficient way. The first step in this model, patent filter is used for screening technology in the field. Then patent citation method is used to pick up important new technology. the screened technology is evaluated by lead users for successibility of market. next step is to select proper outsourcing method for choosen technology under the consideration of environments.
To validate this proposed model, we adopt this model to Digital Video Disk which is ready to market soon. We could find out some important new emerging technology in this field by this new screening method. We conclude that after 3 to 5 years of issue of patents, we can find out basic patents of new emerging technology by this model.
This model gives us lots of merit. That is acuteness of screening of new technology and/or time saving of screening. This model also would be useful for the complementary of patent map method. This model would give our companies facing lack of new technology the competition of new emerging field.
