In this paper we compare simple network management protocol(SNMP) with common management information protocol(CMIP) in an cell-based ATM network. As performance measurements, link traffic and mean delay time are used. Then, network management data is based on ATM Forum interim local management interface(ILMI).
SNMP has simple architecture and is suitable for small network.(e.g. LAN) Meanwhile, CMIP has a various functionality, efficient management scheme and operations based on OSI 7 layer protocol.
In case of SNMP, as polling interval gets shorter, link traffic is increased and message mean delay time gets shorter. In CMIP, as event occurrence rate gets higher(i.e. event interarrival time gets shorter), link traffic is increased.
In conclusion, in view of link traffic and mean delay time, performance of CMIP is better than that of SNMP.
