Ever since Zadeh proposed the fuzzy logic concept, fuzzy control has been widely used to many practical systems such as home automation, subway driving, overhead crane, and so forth. In particular, applications to cement kiln, a water purification process, a steel mill and chemical process has been reported.
As it is developed modern industrial society, refuse disposal is very serious problem. Many large-scale refuse incinerators have been constructed in recent years as urban population grows. However, because refuse incinerator operations involve many kinds of uncertain factors: the variable physical and chemical properties of refuse as fuel, the disturbances of change in refuse properties, and deriving an exact mathematical model of the process. It is very difficult to apply conventional control methods to the combustion control of the refuse incinerator. Fuzzy logic controller can be used to the combustion control of refuse incinerator. It can be used as a means of obtaining operators' empirical rules and specialists' knowledge as linguistic control rules.
In this paper, fuzzy control system will be proposed. It consists of three parts, i.e., fuzzy decision maker, fuzzy sensor and fuzzy logic controller. Fuzzy decision maker considers the plant limitations such as furnace temperature and our objective set value and then it determines the modified objective set value. Fuzzy sensor infers the situation of the plant replacing human observation of the conditions in the furnace and refuse quality. It is useful when it is difficult to collect manipulation rules directly from the process variables. Fuzzy controller has two substructure. One has the rule for the aim of reflection the operator's sense of priority among the control rules. The other has the rule for minimize the error of desired object.
Recently, as the member of refuse incinerator is growing, this study is very important. The proposed fuzzy control system is quite efficient for stable operation, energy utilization, pollution prevention.
