The present study entails a systematic experimental investigation and a kinetic model development of selective non- catalytic reduction of $NO_x$ by ammonia, urea, and hydrazine which is thought to be a successful replacement of ammonia or urea.
The effects of urea molar ratio to NO, reaction temperature and additives (polyethylene oxide (PEO), CO, $C_3H_8$, MeOH and EtOH) on NO reduction in flue gas have been determined in a pilot-scale flow reactor (0.2 m-ID × 6.0 m-high). The flow rate of the flue gas was varied from 50 to 100 N㎥/hr. The inlet concentration of NO in the reactor was varied between 250 and 350 ppm and the outlet concentration of NO was measured at the injection temperature range of 700K-1373K at 50K intervals. During the experiments, the molar ratio of urea solution (5% w/w) to NO was varied from 1.0 to 2.5 and that of oxygen was varied in the range of 3 to 5%. Significant NO reduction begins to occur at a reaction temperature of approximately 1223K, and ammonia emission rapidly decreases with increasing the reaction temperature. As the temperature increases to approximately 1273K, the maximum NO reduction can be attained. At temperatures above 1273K, NO reduction decreases with increasing temperature and ammonia emission is negligible. The temperature range in which the effective NO reduction occurs is called 'temperature window'. The molar ratios of urea to NO does not affect the temperature window but the degree of NO reduction increases to 80% with increasing the molar ratio of urea to NO up to 2.0. Among the tested additives, CO additive has the greatest effect with respect to the shift of effective temperature window and alcohol additives have the least effect.
The effect of reaction temperature and CO additive on the $N_2H_4 - NO_x$ reaction is determined with 12 % w/w $O_2$. The experimental procedure was basically the same as those of the urea process. The outlet concentration of NO was measured at the injection temperature range of 773K-973K at 50K intervals. The molar ratio of hydrazine solution (10 % w/w) to NO was varied from 1.0 to 5.0. The optimum reaction temperature and the molar ratio for maximum NO reduction (60%) are found to be about 873K and 4.0, respectively. Ammonia emission is not observed at an optimum temperature, but the emission becomes significant at lower temperature. Also, the hydrazine with CO additive provides the wider temperature window for the effective $NO_x$ reduction. The peculiar finding is that the temperature window for the effective NO reduction is coincident with that of the formation of $NO_2$.
In addition, the effects of additives for ammonia, urea, cyanic acid and hydrazine on $NO_x$ reduction were examined. In comparison of $NH_3$, cyanic acid (CA) and urea as the reducing agents in the lower oxygen levels (about 2-4%), the urea process with CO and $C_3H_8$ additives is found to be the most effective with respect to a downward shift of the wider temperature window for the effective (above 60%) NO reduction. In comparison of $NH_3$, CA and $N_2H_4$ as the reducing agents in a high oxygen level (about 12%), the hydrazine exhibits found to have the greatest effect on the effective temperature window at lower temperatures.
A kinetic model is proposed for NO reduction rate with - NH and - CN containing selective reducing agents such as urea and hydrazine. Two primary reactions can be expressed kinetically as NI(nitrogenous intermediates) + $O_x$ N_2 + … ($k_r$; rate constant for NO reduction) in which the rate constants of $k_f$ and $k_r$ in the model are determined from the experimental data of urea as:
$k_f = 4.01 × 10^{11} exp (-267/RT)$
$k_r = 7.24 × 10^{10} exp (-230/RT)$
or from the experimental data of hydrazine as:
$k_f = 19.45 × 10^7 exp (-135/RT)$
$k_r = 12.24 × 10^6 exp (-108/RT)$
The proposed model can predict the lowered activation energies caused by the addition of additives of different species.
NI(nitrogenous intermediates)$+ O_x → NO + …$ ($k_f$; rate constant for NO formation) 그리고 $NI + O_x$(oxidants) $→ NO + …$ ($k_r$; rate constant for NO reduction)와 같이 two primary reaction으로 표현되었다.
