Radio pagers have grown in popularity in recent years as they provide a convenient and economical means of achieving wireless personal communications. Among the special requirements of pager receivers is small size, which is limited by the antenna. In this paper, characteristics of a small square loop antenna for pagers were analyzed in view of a electrically small antenna. Electromagnetic coupling effects of a human operator on characteristics of this antenna were investigated in detail. The body enhancement effect, the antenna input impedance and the radiation pattern were analyzed. Coupled integral equations and the method of moments were employed to numerically solve this antenna-body coupling problem and the SALTY-LITE phantom human model was used.
