The Industrial Revolution enabled masses of people to obtain products that made life convenient. As the dwelling environments and economy, so did the progress of everyday products. In response to an ever competitive market, designers differentiate products to increase sales with a heavy focus on increasing consumption design in industry target the audience as the consumer. The audience as the end-user has become a secondary focus.
Therefore, this work is trying to provide a more balanced approach to further the progress of everyday products. In the present work, the product is considered as a Dogu which is introduced to put the emphasis on the user's aspects. Dogu could be defined as every possible means to satisfy the human's need in the human behavior, which includes the material with concrete shape, i.e. the products, and the space. Environment of Dogu constitutes human behavior, Dogu and environment in order to enhance the communication between the user and producer. Environment of Dogu has been investigated from the point of sociology, psychology, human behavior science etc. The system for storage and preservation of foods in Korea was analyzed based on this newly introduced concept environment of Dogu.
Dogu was synthesized and invented depending on history, climate, dwelling environments, local nature and the characteristics of foods. Before refrigerator was available as a common necessity, the system for the storage and preservation of foods had been established using natural character for each food. Thus, various spaces existed to store the corresponding foods. Such spaces united into refrigerator as a limited space. The refrigerator stores foods as cooled indoor furniture while the Dogu existed previously functioned as a wide outdoor space. The results of survey have been proved to be agreed with the above-mentioned. Thus, designers should have to consider the effect of environment of Dogu in making the new product design concept and also to improve the quality of life. Finally, environment of Dogu was very useful to understand what the user requests and how to response it.
