High-performance concrete is designed for high workability and performance. Before hardening, the concrete takes the form of a suspension including cement and aggregates particles. In this case, the behavior of concrete is more influenced by the hydrodynamic properties of the cement paste than by the direct interaction between particles, which is evaluated by yield stress and viscosity based on the rheological theory. On the contrary, the concrete for 3D printing has a limitation in its workability and behaves in a static state, which governed by a direct interaction between particles. In particular, as the binder and water are mixed at a low water-to-cement ratio, the phenomenon that the mixture does not flow and maintains its shape is evaluated as a performance of shape stability after a printing process. However, it is hard to understand how the interaction of binder materials yields the characteristics after printing. This study has tried to describe the binding properties that occur at low water conditions through the characteristics called matric suction. The matric suction is mainly used as a concept of representing the attraction between particles in unsaturated soil. Various tests were conducted to apply it to construction materials such as cement binder, and the effect of matric suction in cement-based materials was verified through the elastic models. Since the matric suction is based on the capillary phenomenon, the lower water-cement ratio induced the higher matric suction. The matric suction acts as an eigenstrain or confining stress in compressive direction, and it played an important role in determining the shape stability of 3D printed concrete. In addition, it was confirmed that matric suction is dominant characteristic that occurs not only in 3D printing but also in environments with low water-to-cement ratio. For example, the bleeding leakage during the placement of normal concrete into the mold or the adsorption of cement particles on the surface of aggregates make the water-to-cement ratio very low partially and induce the development of matric suction. So, considering the matric suction provides better understanding for the decrease in formwork pressure, which is less than the effective stress, and the effect of volume fraction of the aggregates in rheological characteristics depending on the dosage of polycarboxylate ether.
